Sarpy County was formed in 1857 and was named after Colonel Peter Sarpy, an early fur trader. As of the 2010 census, Sarpy County was Nebraska's third most populous county. In 2002, Nebraska discontinued the 1922 system in the three most populous counties: Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster counties.
